8 Found Alive in Italian Hotel Hit by Avalanche

Search crews reported early Friday that eight people have been found alive inside an Italian mountain hotel that was hit by an avalanche a day earlier, killing at least two. A search was underway for at least 25 missing people at the Rigopiano hotel in central Italy. The avalanche came after a series of earthquakes. Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said the country had experienced an “unprecedented vice of frost and earthquakes.” The European Union expressed solidarity with Italy after the earthquake and subsequent avalanche and pledged to offer assistance, with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker saying “an earthquake in Italy is an earthquake in Europe.”
